Group match play tournaments

Group match play tournaments are simple but versatile. Over a number of rounds, players are paired against each other in four-player games. If the number of players is not divisible by four, a number of three-player games will be created. Players earn points based on their finishing position (see table below). At the end of the tournament, the player with the most points is the winner.

Group match play tournaments can also be used to run a four-player playoff tournament. Set "Matches each round" to the number of games you the final four players to play a single round to determine the winner.

Duration
Duration determines how many rounds your tournament will run. The default value of "No set duration" will let you run the tournament for as many or as few rounds as you want. Since it's not possible to change the duration after the tournament starts it's best to leave this setting at "No set duration" if you're in the least unsure how many rounds your tournament will last.
Matches each round
Determines how many games each pair of players should play against each other each round. For each game, players will receive points according to the scoring system chosen.
Tiebreaker

The default setting is to avoid breaking ties automatically, but there are several other options:

  • No tiebreaker (default): Tied players are left as ties.
  • Automatic tiebreaking: Ties are broken using the strengths of opponents faced.
  • Placement (most 1st/2nd places): Ties are broken first by the number of first place finishes. If there are still ties, the number of 2nd place finishes is used to break ties.
  • Placement (fewest 4th/3rd places): Ties are broken first by the number of 4th place finishes. If there are still ties, the number of 3rd place finishes is used to break ties.
  • Original seed: The players original seed in the tournament is sued to break ties.
